(USN photo, owen collection)

Personnel of VRU-4/VR-24 Det Port Lyautey September 1948
VRU-4 Det Port Lyautey became VR-24 Det Port Lyautey on 1 September 1948. This photo may record ceremonies relating to the change of squadron designation, or to the change of command that took place on that date.

(USN photo, johnson collection)

Commander James Johnson and officers of VR-24 Detachment Port Lyautey. Date of photo between September 1948 and November 1950.

(USN photo, johnson collection)

R5D 91999 and thirty-seven personel. Date and location of this photo is uncertain but is from the archives of CDR James Johnson who was VR-24 Commanding Officer from September 1948 to November 1950. The background suggests the photo was taken in Port Lyautey when CDR Johnson was based there from 1 August 1950 to 15 November 1950 when relieved by CDR Smith. Additional information on this photo would be appreicated.

(johnson collection)

CDR James Johnson, his wife Rita, and two guests enjoy an evening in a Quonset Hut. Until Navy Seabees built permanent structures at Port Lyautey in 1952, VR-24 made do with Quonset Huts for both officer and enlisted quarters, and some maintenance shops. Based on CDR Johnson's Aviation Winter Green uniform, this photo is thought to have been taken in October or November 1950.
